Tracie Cant’s Subculture Report on London
London is a metropolis for the rich, the famous and the übercool!!! From London´s ultra trendy Notting Hill to the edgy, raw Hackney (East London), it´s easy to see the fashion statements at play. Either taken straight from the catwalks around the world or created on the street, you cannot help but pose the question, who inspired who? Which came first? The street or the catwalk?
Notoriously designers now street-scout at gigs and wherever they might stumble across on cool fashionistas. The prime location in London to rub shoulders with the “Oh So Cool” is Topshop‘s flagship store on busy Oxford Street in London´s West End. You will never see so many diverse, fashion-conscious people under one roof (except at London Fashion Week). The queen of the übercool, Kate Moss, has chosen this venue to showcase her very own collection, which epitomises what London style is all about.
This brings us full circle as the quintessential London look is exactly what Miss Moss portrays. The effortless mix of the old and the new, put together in such a way that really shouldn’t work, but really does. It’s a matter of taste and the right eye for the look - not everyone can pull it off! It takes courage and imagination. This is what London is good at!! Being a bit eccentric and eclectic. Not taking the obvious but taking things to their obvious conclusion. London is the capital of understated cool.
The key looks that are shouting out from the street are equally eclectic, from A Clockwork Orange to smart mod. But one thing is for sure, if you want to know which fashion road to go down for the next season: Think Bauhaus, think The Cure, think A Clockwork Orange, think Siouxsie and the Banshees!! Think the 80s is back? It is and it´s black!!! Everyone‘s dressing up again. And it´s “Oh So Much” fun!!!
Less is more and more is just simply more fun. Take the leap, get out that Cure CD and black eyeliner, and join the ranks of the übercool…
